The United National Transport Union (UNTU) is shocked at the senseless brutal killing of one of its female members amidst the international 16 days of activism for non-violence against women and children campaign that started on 25 November and ends on 10 December 2016
Akhona Siduka, a metro train guard, was overpowered by armed robbers and shot just meters away from the front door of her home in Langa, Cape Town. She died at the scene. Her son was in her house during the incident.
“Akhona was a vulnerable woman arriving home after risking her life at work to protect employees of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) and commuters. The senseless violence and attacks on defenceless women in our beautiful country must stop,” says Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU.
He urged the South African Police to leave no stone unturned to arrest Siduka’s killers so that the law can take its cause.
“Our sincerest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues who will always remember her friendly smile. She was a proud loyal member of UNTU,” says Harris.
