I am humbled and very proud of the letter I received yesterday as the General Secretary of The United National Transport Union (UNTU) from Lloyd Tobias, Acting Chief Executive of Transnet Freight Rail, thanking all UNTU members.
UNTU and its members in several state-owned enterprises find us in the most dire and challenging situation since the start of our democratic Government: a deadly virus threatening the existence of mankind.
Now our Government is at war – a war to educate its people and to mobilise every aspect throughout the spheres of Government to combat the spreading of the virus, to ensure that people have access to essential food and medicine and to keep South Africa’s fragile economy going so that this rainbow nation can pick-up the pieces when this is over.
To each of our UNTU members I want to say that you are the example of President’s Cyril Ramaphosa ’s “Thuma Mina” (Send me) campaign. You serve and work side by side to build South Africa.
As a united union and nation, we will overcome COVID-19 and emerge victoriously.
We pray for the safety of each member, their families and their loved ones.
