PRASA OBJECTS TO UNTU’s DISPUTE ON MEDICAL BROKERS

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) could not hear the United National Transport Union (UNTU) at the conciliation on dispute about its member’s choice of affordable medical aid after the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) objected.

Pieter Greyling, Deputy General Secretary of UNTU, says PRASA raised a motion in limine arguing that it was premature for the latest dispute by UNTU being heard pending the outcome of an CCMA award on the 19 disputes.

The dispute about PRASA’s employees limited choice of a cost effective medical aid also forms part of the 19 disputes that was heard by the CCMA last week. In die 19 disputes UNTU asked the CCMA to rule that PRASA must honour the terms of a settlement agreement.

These disputes were declared after PRASA’s non-compliance with the settlement agreement.

UNTU declared another dispute in November after PRASA’s management neglected to negotiate at the PRASA Bargaining Forum on ways to broaden their employee’s choice of a cost effective medical aid

Greyling says UNTU is awaiting the ruling of the CCMA on PRASA’s point in limine.

“While PRASA is trying to play cat and mouse games with UNTU by not negotiating in good faith, their employees are getting more frustrated and more demotivated. The harsh reality is that PRASA’s employees simply can no longer afford the limited selection of medical aids they are limited to choose from,” says Greyling.
