URGENCY TO GET UNTU’S WOMEN, GENDER AND YOUTH STRUCTURES OFF THE GROUND

The Women Leadership of the United National Transport Union (UNTU) feel that we would be failing our members as women, if we don’t take drastic action to get the structures of the Women, Gender and Youth Committees of our proud Union off the ground and in doing so we could be setting the trend for rivals to follow. For years, these structures have been a dream for the women in our leadership positions but unfortunately, we did not have the time or the support to actively place the responsibility on our various branches and actively arrange involvement for these structures.

This is now going to change with the Executive Council’s decision to establish a Women, Gender and Youth Committee consisting of; Executive Council Members and Full-time Trade Union Representatives, Zonke Cebekhulu and Linda Biljoen, Maria Chonco, National Organiser: Gauteng and Sonja Carstens, UNTU’s Media, Liaison and Communication Officer.

The aim of this committee is to strengthen and enhance the excellent work being done by similar committees within Transnet, PRASA and Bombela, in which UNTU is the majority Union, to align our work with what already is being done by similar committees in our affiliate federation, FEDUSA, who take these issues forward on our behalf at NEDLAC and to assist disadvantaged communities.
To start afresh and to avoid confusion, the Committee requests each UNTU branch to ask for nominations and elect candidates for each of the three divisions and send the names of the representatives of each branch through to sonja@untu.co.ca by no later than Friday 12 May at 16:00.

All UNTU members are invited to e-mail any issues or suggestions to the Committee at enquiries@untu.co.za

Issued on behalf of UNTU by Sonja Carstens, Media and Liaison Officer.
