UNTU WELCOMES STEVEN LESHABANA AS OUR NEW EXCO MEMBER

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to welcome Steven Leshabana (39), Secretary of the UNTU Witbank Branch, Full-time Trade Union Representative and the Chairman of the Area 7 Committee, with his appointment to the Executive Council of the Union.

Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, informed Leshabana that he was now promoted to the Executive Council in the vacancy created by Dan Khumalo, who took up his position as a Deputy General Secretary at UNTU Head Office on 8 January 2018.

According to Harris, Leshabana was next in line for the position, according to the voting results of the UNTU Congress held in November 2015. The results determined that Leshabana was next in line for the position of Executive Council Member.

“It is an honour for us to welcome Leshabana to the highest leadership of the Union,” says Harris.

Leshabana says he is ready for the new challenge awaiting him. “It is time for me to take up more responsibility. I have grown a lot since I was appointed as a Full-time Trade Union Representative in 2013,” he says.

He joined the South African Rail and Habour Union (SARHU) in 2003 after he was appointed as a train assistant at Transnet Freight Rail. His colleagues elected him as their Trade Union Representative after they saw how Leshabana fought his own battles.
