The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Chris Sauer, a Safety Officer of Transnet Engineering in Bellville, who passed away after a car accident yesterday.

Mr. Sauer was on his way back from Saldanha to Bellville when the company bakkie he was driving collided with a truck in an intersection. The exact cause of the accident is unknown and is being investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

On the 10th January 2017 Mr. Sauer was celebrating his 40 years’ anniversary in the employ of Transnet. He died a day later.

Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, says Mr Sauer is one of more than 1 700 fatalities on the South African roads since the start of the Festive Season and pleaded with all motorist to be more alert on the roads.
