The United National Transport Union (UNTU) Executive Council and Management Committee observed a minute of silence for all the nearly 50 000 South Africans, including members of the Union, who have passed on due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Union has always been very vocal in its stance that one life lost, is one too many, but this deadly virus left its hands tied.
Hendrik Fourie, President of UNTU, appeals to all South Africans to adjust to the new normal by adhering to the lockdown regulations, maintain social distancing, wash their hands regularly with warm water and soap or sanitize their hands and wear their facial mask.
“Our lives will never be the same. We have to adjust our old ways to protect ourselves and our loved ones as we brace ourselves for the predicted third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Fourie.
Fourie appealed to all UNTU members to utilize the employee wellness programs provided by their employers if they are struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one or a colleague or have difficulty in adapting.
He also urges all UNTU members to continue to give meaning to the spirit of UBUNTU wherever they go.
“Having humanity towards others in these exceedingly difficult times will play a major role in our fight against this pandemic as a society,” says Fourie.
