The roll-out of the first ever facial masks of the United National Transport Union (UNTU) as part of the efforts of the leadership of the Union to assist with combatting the spreading of the deadly global COVID-19 pandemic has commenced in the Western Cape.
Trevor Wasserfall, Vice-President of UNTU, says the province has been paralysed over the past two months with the highest infection rate. Yesterday the Western Cape reported 46 951 confirmed cases and recorded a devastating additional 71 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the province to 1 276.
Earlier this week Transnet reported that 232 of its 274 COVID-19 cases were in the Western Cape. To date four (4) Transnet employees have lost their lives to this virus. The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) is also battling with more than 150 infections in the Western Cape.
“The Executive Council of UNTU decided to commence with the roll-out in the Western Cape as it is currently the epicentre of this virus. The masks will be distributed to UNTU members in the rest of the country within the next two (2) weeks,” says Wasserfall.
He thanked all the UNTU members who participated in the voting poll on Facebook or who responded via e-mail to indicate if they wanted the “facial mask” or the “UNTU shirt”.
“A special word of thanks to UNTU President, Hendrik Fourie and the Executive Council who acted swiftly to ensure that high quality masks are procured and printed with our logo as part of UNTU’s social responsibility project, #UNTUCares.
“UNTU’s thoughts and prays remain with all our members who are working on the forefront of this pandemic to ensure that our frail economy can recover.
From all the predictions COVID-19 is here to stay for the next few years.
“Adjust to the new normal by always wearing your facial mask, adhering to social distancing of 1,5 meters and wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water,” says Wasserfall.
Do not forget to share your pictures when you receive your UNTU mask from the Union by sending a WhatsApp to 082 463 6806.
