UNTU CONDEMNS SHOOTING OF STAFF MEMBER

The United National Transport Union (UNTU) condemns the senseless shooting of Kwazi Mbele, UNTU general worker at UNTU House in Durban.

“The Union is grateful that Kwazi is in a stable condition and recovering in hospital. We pray for his speedy recovery,” says Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU.

The Union does not know the circumstances surrounding the incident but call on the South African Police Service to arrest and on the National Prosecuting Authority to charge his attacker so that justice can be done.

According to the Bill of Rights in our Constitution everyone in South African has a fundamental right to human dignity, life, freedom and security of the person.

Harris says the South African Government should do more to promote these rights in our society.

“The high crime rate in South Africa has resulted in a life becoming meaningless in this country. One life lost is one too many,” says Harris.

Issued on behalf of UNTU by Sonja Carstens, Deputy-General Secretary: Media, Liaison and Communication.
