The Board of Prasa assured the Leadership of #UNTU on 12 November 2019 that 3 100 officers of the Rapid Rail Police Unit in the South African Police Service (SAPS) will be deployed with immediate effect, as an interim measure to ensure that Prasa employees and commuters are safe, pending the appointment of new security contracts.
Steve Harris, General Secretary of #UNTU, informed the Board that the promise of police deployment to safeguard employees of Prasa and commuters have been made in vain many times in the past. Harris warned the Board not to rely on the SAPS.
Unfortunately the Board chose to ignore UNTU’s warnings.
Afterwards, criminals attacked depots and stations and caused damages that would amount to millions of rand to repair.
Please provide #UNTU with feedback to indicate if you experience an increace in presence of Railway Police Officials on platforms and at stations, indicating the station or depot that you are referring to.
Issued on behalf of UNTU by Sonja Carstens, Deputy-General Secretary responsible for Media, Liaison and Communication.
