The United National Transport Union (UNTU) would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the families, colleagues and friends of the two Union members, a train driver and a train assistant, who died last night in a head on collision between two trains at the Matlabas crossing between Thabazimbi and Lephalale in Limpopo.
“UNTU and all its members are heartbroken. May God comfort you in this very difficult time.
“Our prayers are also with the train driver and the train assistant in the second train who have been hospitalised after they were severely injured. UNTU hopes that the injured crew will find strength with each new day and recover soon,’ says John Pereira, Acting General Secretary of UNTU.
According to Pereira the Union can’t emphasis enough the importance of safety first. “One life lost is one too many.”
Issued on behalf of UNTU by Sonja Carstens, Deputy-General Secretary responsible for media, liaison and communication.
