The Joint Task Team, consisting of members of the United National Transport Union (UNTU) and Transnet, have finalised all the applications received by UNTU members who believed that they were affected, after the employer unilaterally forced employees in low operational divisions, to take leave over the December 2015/ January 2016 Festive Season.
According to Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU who represents the Union on the Joint Task Team, the team could not sit today as Transnet was not able to obtain a mandate on how the leave will be allocated.
“The Joint Task Team will meet again on 13 November when we hope to finalise the matter. The Employer will then send a letter to each employee who made a submission to inform them of the outcome thereof. We believe the process will be dealt with by the end of November,” says Harris.
The Joint Task Team was established after Judge Connie Prinsloo ruled in the Labour Court in Johannesburg last year that Transnet breached the terms of a Collective Agreement when it unilaterally forced employees to take leave.
