To all Members of the United National Transport Union (UNTU), the Leadership of the Union would like to extend a friendly reminder to you to notify your Trade Union Representative (TUR) or Full-time Trade Union Representative (FTUR) timeously should you require representation or assistance.
Members who require assistance must remember that TUR’s and FTUR’s have several other members which rely on them. When a member asks for assistance, they need to set aside time beforehand to ensure availability and proper preparation.
Wyndham Evans, President of UNTU, says he believes that a five-working day notice period is adequate for a member to notify their TUR and therefore urges members to do so.
“Your TUR is expected to respond within 12 hours. If you receive no response from your TUR, please inform your Branch Chairman or your Branch Secretary or even your FTUR. If nobody is available, please phone Sonja Carstens, our Media, Liaison and Communication Officer, at Head Office or e-mail her at enquiries@untu.co.za for immediate assistance,” says Evans.
The President would like to take this opportunity to emphasize that members must follow the Union structures provided to them in the Constitution of UNTU. The structure is as follows:
Approach your TUR in your division.
- No response, talk to your Branch Secretary or Branch Chairman for assistance.
- If they are not assisting you, phone your FTUR for advice.
- If you are still not satisfied, phone or e-mail Sonja Carstens. She will ensure that one
of the Deputy, General Secretaries, the Membership Office or the Organisers of UNTU
responds to you.
“There is no need for any UNTU member to complain that their voices are not being heard. The Leadership of UNTU did everything in its power to ensure that our members get fast and easy access to the assistance that they are paying membership fees for,” says Evans.
Issued on behalf of UNTU by Sonja Carstens, Media and Liaison Officer.
