The alleged internal infighting at the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) might be taking its toll on the Unions senior structures, but it is assisting the United National Transport Union (UNTU) in growing stronger with each passing day.
This afternoon Mr. Lebogang Mvambo, former National Enterprise Secretary: PRASA and Tshwane Central Local Chairperson for SATAWU, decided to follow in the footsteps of thousands of his colleagues and rather join UNTU. He was recruited by Brian Davids, UNTU Executive Council Member and National Full Time Trade Union Representative.
“I was suspended by SATAWU more than a year ago, without any merit. I have tried to stay positive about the Union which I used to represent at almost every level, but to no avail. The internal infighting took its toll on me. It feels as though SATAWU is no longer serving the interests of workers, but rather serves its own personal interests,” says Mvambo.
Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, welcomed Mvambo’s decision. “UNTU puts the interest of our members first. We represent the interest of our diverse membership without getting involved in politics.”
