DONT GET CARRIED AWAY BY THE FESTIVE SEASON

DONT GET CARRIED AWAY BY THE FESTIVE SEASON

UNTU members please don’t get carried away this Festive Season. Drinking alcohol on duty, whether you are drunk or not, it will constitute misconduct that can lead to dismissal.

In terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act employers are responsible to ensure that employees that seem to be under the influence of an intoxicating substance, or consume such a substance in the workplace, are not allowed on the premises of the company.

The employers where the United National Transport Union (UNTU) are recognised does not allow alcohol or any other intoxicating substance on its premises.

If you are caught with alcohol on duty, it will usually be irrelevant as to the amount of alcohol consumed by the employee as any amount will detract from performance.

If you employer suspects that you might have used alcohol, a breathalyser may be used to establish if alcohol is present.

UNTU therefore appeals to our members to refrain from using alcohol or any other substance while on duty.
