The United National Transport Union (UNTU) is shock and dismayed by the brutal murder of one of its members, Thandi Nocela. Nocela was killed in Sasolburg on Saturday morning by a male known to her. The suspect was arrested.
Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU, says that research has shown that every eight hours a South African woman is killed by her partner or someone known to her. “This disturbing figure ranks South Africa the highest number in the world,” says Harris.
UNTU calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to ensure that Nocela’s death does not just become another statistic. “We want the law to take its cause and see justice be done,” says Harris.
Nocela used to work as a Yard Official at Sasolburg Yard for four years. A memorial service will be held for her today at 10:00 at the Zamdela Art Center in Sasolburg.
She will be buried in Kroonstad on Saturday 8 October. Joe Mashamaite, UNTU Executive Council Member and full time trade union representative, and the UNTU branches of Sasolburg and Leeuhof will represent the Union at her funeral.
