THE STATE-OF-THE ART EQUIPMENT VALUED AT R23.4 MILLION IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON IMPROVING OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES AT THE BUSY TERMINAL. Transnet Port Terminals welcomes the arrival of new Terberg Haulers at Durban Container Terminal. PORT terminals are about to get a lot more efficient after new haulers became operational last week. The state-of-the art equipment valued at R23.4 million is expected to make a significant impact on improving operational efficiencies at the busy terminal. “The benefits of having these new haulers at Pier one will improve the availability and ultimately equipment reliability at our terminal.  The increased reliability will correlate to fewer breakdowns resulting in minimal interruptions to operations.  Furthermore, the terminal will be able to operate six gangs without equipment shortages.  We are committed to delivering better services and achieving better turnaround times at Pier one and the arrival of these new haulers is a substantial investment by Transnet Port Terminals which clearly demonstrates that, “said Brenda Magqwaka, Transnet Port Terminals general manager: KZN Operations Containers. Driver training took place recently, which included endurance testing on the haulers, allowing them to be handed over to operations earlier than originally anticipated.  The newly designed seat of these haulers has a host of features, adjustments and lumbar support to improve the ergonomics of the machine.  Furthermore, what makes these haulers different from the old ones is that the seat has a built in sensor that cuts off the engine when the operator has left the seat for more than five minutes. As these new Terberg Haulers are part of a replacement project, they are to replace the current Mafi Haulers, thus the terminal will decommission and phase out 14 old Mafi Haulers respectively. The hauler replacement project is planned to be completed in 2019, with a further 30 haulers planned to be purchased in 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 financial year.  The terminal is also embarking on the phased refurbishment of 18 Rubber Tyre Gantry cranes at DCT Pier one which is due to start in January 2017. TPT has committed R385 million to the upgrading and improvement of equipment and facilities for Durban Container Terminals Pier one.

The Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) will rule on Wednesday on a technical point Bombela, the operator of the Gautrain, relied on the past few weeks in a desperate attempt to avoid a strike. Steve Harris, general secretary of the United National Transport Union (UNTU), is full of confidence that the CCMA will rule in the union’s favour. This means that the CCMA might issue UNTU with a certificate that the ongoing dispute between the parties cannot be resolved. According to a collective agreement between UNTU and Bombela, the union needs this certificate before giving the employer 48 hours written notice of its intention to go on a strike after obtaining a mandate from its members. UNTU earlier declared a dispute against Bombela’s attempts to unilaterally short-change its hard working and hyper efficient employees. The company started salary negotiations with an offer to pay a 3% salary increase when UNTU demanded 15%. The gap has narrowed to a 9% vs 7,6% divide when negotiations deadlocked. “Bombela is not prepared to negotiate in good faith and that leaves UNTU with no option but to ask our members to consider a strike, even though it would have a more devastating effect on the already slow growing economy,” Harris said. “The reality is that more and more commuters rely on the Gautrain due to the petrochemical strike by the Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU) entering its fourth week. A strike at the Gautrain now will have a devastating effect on commuters trying to get to work and back,” Harris added. Bombela succeeded in delaying a possible strike when the company alleged that UNTU had mysteriously “lost” more than 30 of its members since salary negotiation started in April. Jacob Zuma should immediately step in and demand a public explanation from Transport Minister Dipuo Peters about the latest in the never ending debacle surrounding the crippled Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). “Just like organised labour the South African public no longer believes a word coming from PRASA’s Management or its Minister. There seems to be a deliberate attempt to protect whoever are responsible for the billions the railway operation lost due to irregular tenders.” “The United National Transport Union (UNTU) firmly believes that this taxpayers money should have been used by PRASA to improve the working conditions and salaries of our members, to adhere to its Constitutional obligation as employer to provide a safe working environment for its employees and to improve on its poor service delivery to commuters who have no choice as to make use of this form of public transport,” says Mr. Steve Harris, General Secretary of UNTU.   Peters yesterday denied that she had stopped a probe into the alleged corrupt contracts saying that she did not at any stage instructed any member of the PRASA Board and/or administration to stop any investigation of any nature.   In a statement the Department of Transport said “We wish to place on record that the allegations are both malicious and a deliberate distortion of the truth. Minister Peters as a shareholder in PRASA has the responsibility to ensure that PRASA delivers on its core mandate and that such delivery is underpinned by prudent and good governance principles.”   Like other stakeholders and political parties UNTU has gotten hold of the letter sent by Peters to Mr. Popo Molefe, Chairperson of PRASA, dated 12 August 2016 and marked as “Confidential”.   In the letter the Minister writes “I therefore, ask that you close off this investigation process and consider the results or reports thereof. Furthermore, the board is requested to submit a detail report indicating the progress and the outcome of the investigation. A determination of any further investigation and a way forward will subsequently be made after studying the report in detail.”   Harris says the Minister wrote her letter in the week that Brig. Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the Hawks, confirmed to UNTU that it is a very costly and time consuming investigation for the South African Police Service as there are various tender contracts involved which will require forensic audits and analysis.   “Taking the view of the Hawks into account it is absolutely mind boggling that the Minister thinks it is justified to complain over the “long and protracted investigation” being done by Werksmans Attorneys on behalf of the PRASA board. One would have liked to see the Minister do everything in her power to assist where needs be in the investigation so that the law can take its cause and justice can be seen to be done, another Constitutional obligation she committed herself to when she took her oath as Minister,” says Harris.   It took adv. Thuli Madonsela, Public Protector, years to finalize her report entitled “Derailed” about the widespread evidence of maladministration, improper conduct, and nepotism at PRASA.   “Earlier this week UNTU and South African Transport and Allied Workers Union, (SATAWU) joined forces to demand the immediate removal of Bheki Mchunu, Senior Manager Employee Relations at PRASA whom is also representing the employer at the PRASA Bargaining Forum.   Mr. Mchunu entertains the National Transport Movement and Detawu while the constitution of the PRASA Bargaining Forum is clear that only trade unions with more than 25% plus 1 members qualify. This continues in spite of an undertaking of PRASA’s attorneys to the contrary. PRASA’s irresponsible conduct has left the organised labour with no option but to exercise their rights in terms of the Labour Relations Act. GENERAL Next Post MINISTER DO SOMETHING –August 5, 2016 – byColette koortz Edit Template Dear Minister, On 1 August 2016 while your Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) trains where one again delayed, a horrific incident that occurred on platform 2 of the Cape Town Station when a man was attacked and robbed. A fight broke out when the commuter was trying to protect himself against a robber. I do not know how often you use trains to travel since you became a politician, but if you still do you would know that the Police Office is a stone throw away from platform 2, but yet no police ware on scene, despite desperate screams from commuters for help.  The train driver also tried to break up the fight but to no avail. The robber disappeared only to come back with his mate armed with a knife. The mate was waving the knife around amongst commuter’s. A security guard got stabbed in the face, but still the police did not react to the scene. Commuters were running and screaming like crazy. Minister, it is no use constantly pleading with Prasa to provide the United National Transport Union (UNTU) with answers. The company simply pulls up its shoulders and say that there is no money in their budget to ensure the safety of our members, their staff and the commuters. Prasa rather spends R2.6 billion of tax payer money on an irregular tender for locomotives. Therefor Minister UNTU would like to know from you what are you going to do to prevent these criminals from getting onto the station? Do they just get a free pass through the ticket gates or do they come in from the other end of the station?  There just seems to be no control.  The various violent crime incidents over the past month just in the Western Cape clearly indicates that the safety of your voters, the commuters and our members are at risk. I am disappointed Minister to see that there is barely any visible security or police on the platforms especially at month-end times when our members and commuters are travelling home with their hard earned salaries. The security and police are also missing in action when trains are delayed and there are hordes of commuters on the platforms waiting for a train. Because there are no police or security to refrain commuters from overloading carriages, passengers are squashed to their limits when trains are delayed. Commuters are desperate to reach their destinations but something needs to be implemented to prevent this overcrowding on the trains. Minister why can’t a system be implemented that when trains are delayed the police and security must be on standby to prevent commuters from overloading and to urge them to wait for the next train? Are they not supposed to be deployed at the platforms? Minister as the largest and oldest trade union in the transport industry UNTU realizes that Rome was not built in a day. The Union are not expecting miracles but we have a duty to our members to ensure that you adhere to their Constitutional rights by providing a safe working environment for all. UNTU supported you Minister when you warned the board of Prasa in June that they must get their house in order and accused them for failing to turn around the ailing state-owned company. Since then the union waited patiently for you to fulfil your political duties during the municipal election the past week. But now Minister UNTU pleads with you to get back to the basics and meet with this Union and its affiliated federation, Fedusa, to discuss urgent steps that needs to be taken before more people are killed and attacked on our railway lines and at our railway stations.
